The Shining Pdf

ISBN: B008U2P6HC
Title: The Shining Pdf

Before Doctor Sleep, there was The Shining, a classic of modern American horror from the undisputed master, Stephen King.

Jack Torrance's new job at the Overlook Hotel is the perfect chance for a fresh start. As the off-season caretaker at the atmospheric old hotel, he'll have plenty of time to spend reconnecting with his family and working on his writing. But as the harsh winter weather sets in, the idyllic location feels ever more remote...and more sinister. And the only one to notice the strange and terrible forces gathering around the Overlook is Danny Torrance, a uniquely gifted five-year-old.

Still Holds Up I read this masterpiece back when originally released. Following that, I have watched the Kubrick movie every Halloween since its release on DVD sometime last century. Love both. The book is dark and the movie captures the required essence, but the book gets deeper into Jack's mind which is not a fun place. The book and movie conflict on room #'s 217 vs. 237, and Wendy's hair color, which I have embedded as that of Ms. Duvall's. And anyone interested will find on the inter-web a plethora of reasons these were changed from book to movie. Fun stuff. If you have never read the Shining, please give yourself a gift and read it if you enjoy horror. And if you haven't read it this century, try it again, as it may very well scare you in new ways. I live in Maine and while SK is our scary hero, he is also a great neighbor in our state.Good entertainment, great horror I generally find it difficult to get terribly engrossed in horror novels where supernatural entities (or divine for that matter) play a prominent role, and The Shining is a good example of such for me. However, though I may not really have lost myself in this novel, King's skill at building suspense kept me turning the pages late into the night multiple times and it's been a while since that's happened. There are many who write more eloquently, many who craft more impressive plots, and many who are more deft at building characters, but I think few exceed King in ability to make a reader simultaneously desire and dread reading the next paragraph or turning the page. He is very, very good at describing various evil beings' appearances, actions, and manners of speaking. I re-read several passages in The Shining multiple times just to gape again at what was happening or how a character just barely escaped a horrific death.Apart from The Running Man, a quite different type of novel, this is actually the first book by Stephen King I've read. I do have a few more on the shelves and am really looking forward to them, not so much for the stories / plots but rather for the goosebumps and tension I experienced while reading The Shining.I ought to mention that King's style here is dry and matter of fact, and the family members seem quite wooden initially. Over several chapters he does throw in a great deal of background history on the family and this helps flesh them out quite a bit, but they never became completely convincing to me. This and the somewhat formulaic plot based on a haunted hotel detracted somewhat from the overall experience, but once winter set in and the action began I easily understood why King is so celebrated. But I was actually caught off guard and found myself loving the book more then I loved the movie I had seen the movie before I read the book so going in I thought I knew what to expect. But I was actually caught off guard and found myself loving the book more then I loved the movie. I still think the movie is good but this book is just... more. The characters in this book are just so complex. Each one of them feels real. One moment I am sympathetic with Jack a man who just can't seem to get a break. But the next moment I am scared of him and what he might do to his family. Wendy is also so much more complex. I found myself really interested in her and absolutely scared for her life.Danny though is my favorite. He's such a bright and sweet boy and it was interesting to get into his head. I loved to read how conflicted he got between protecting his family but also not wanting to upset them. I also really love his interactions with Dick Hallorann who is also very interesting.Overall this is an excellent creepy read.

National Geographic Complete National Parks of the United States, 2nd Edition Pdf

ISBN: 1426216920
Title: National Geographic Complete National Parks of the United States, 2nd Edition Pdf 400
Author: Mel White
Published Date: 2016
Page: 544

MEL WHITE is a writer specializing in travel and natural history. He has worked for National Geographic publications since 1990 and has written more than 50 magazine articles for National Geographic magazine and National Geographic Traveler covering destinations such as Australia, Borneo, the Amazon River, the Swiss Alps, and Madagascar, as well as North American sites from Alaska to the Everglades. His books include the two-volume National Geographic Guide to Birdwatching Sites and National Geographic Guide to America’s Outdoors: Southwest.

National Geographic’s comprehensive travel guide to recreation areas, trails, historic sites, nature hikes, seashores, camping, and campgrounds is for everyone who loves outdoor recreation. This 544-page reference is an ultimate travel planner for all things national parks, filled with full-color photos, detailed maps, historical background, and practical facts on the location of the park system properties, as well as the best times to visit and top-rated activities

After reading this, you will want to "find your park" Great primer on all of the National Parks, but that's just what it is - a primer. I wish it had been more detailed, exploring the background and history of each park, but I suppose this would have turned into a series, rather than a one-off.Also, I suppose it's only natural, but the "stars" of the national park system - such as Yosemite or Yellowstone get more coverage than small, lesser known parks. Too bad, because imo, the "stars" already have enough of the spotlight shone on them through many other media (film, documentaries, park specific books, etc.), whereas the little gems need to be highlighted more so they can receive the appreciation they deserve.Still, if you want to get your feet wet and see which park is worth exploring, this book hopefully, gives enough tantalizing information to make you want to learn more and as the National Parks Service slogan says, "Go Find Your Park".Beautiful pictures, great book, good information This book is amazing. I bought it because my wife and I are planning to take a road trip for a couple months across the United States of America and visit all the National Parks. It has been one of our dreams for a while and this book has helped us with what to expect, when the best times to go are, and the picture are simply stunning. Not helpful for planning visits to the Parks This is a beautiful book for learning the basics about our National Parks. It is not very helpful for those who are planning trips to visit the Parks. We were hoping for itineraries, "must see" suggestions, travel tips. If you're looking for a book that educates you about the Parks, this one has beautiful pictures (of course! It's National Geographic!). If you're looking for a book to use in planning a trip to visit any of the Parks, there are other books that will fit that bill.

Genograms Free Pdf

ISBN: 0393705099
Title: Genograms Pdf Assessment and Intervention (Third Edition) (Norton Professional Books (Paperback))
Author: Monica McGoldrick
Published Date: 2008
Page: 380

“[S]eminal….While aimed at psychologists, family therapists, and social workers, this book is not overly scientific and certainly not too technical for the lay reader….Genealogists may find this book valuable on several levels.” - Association of Professional Genealogists Quarterly“[H]ighly recommend this book for all who would like to supplement their practice with this valuable therapeutic tool.” - Milton H. Erickson Foundation Newsletter“[G]odmother of genograms has triumphed again….[P]ractical applications of community genograms....[and] mapping relationships with work colleagues have broad appeal.” - The British Journal of Psychiatry“[A] seminal work….new edition has been expanded to incorporate slightly modified symbols to enhance the usefulness...in clinical and research settings.” - The Family Psychologist“[A]n almost overwhelming array of riches….I recommend it highly.” - Bulletin of the Menninger Clinic Monica McGoldrick, M.A., M.S.W., Ph.D., is co-founder and director of the Multicultural Family Institute in Highland Park, New Jersey, and adjunct faculty at Robert Wood Johnson Medical School. Her books include Ethnicity and Family Therapy, Third Edition, Genograms: Assessment and Intervention, Second Edition, The Expanded Family Life Cycle, Third Edition and The Genogram Journey.Randy Gerson, Ph.D., was Director of Atlanta College for Systemic Thinking until his death in 1995.Sueli Petry, Ph.D., is an Associate Faculty Member of the Multicultural Family Institute and is in private practice.

Widely used by both family therapists and all health care professionals, the genogram is a graphic way of organizing the mass of information gathered during a family assessment and finding patterns in the family system for more targeted treatment.

Now updated and expanded in its third edition, and featuring revised genograms for easier reading, reflecting the growing and widespread use of genograms for clinical intervention, this best-selling text provides a standard method for constructing a genogram, doing a genogram interview, and interpreting the results. Genograms of famous families―Sigmund Freud, Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, the Kennedys, Jane Fonda and Ted Turner, Bill Clinton, Princess Diana, the Roosevelts, and Thomas Jefferson, to name a few―bring the text to life, and help to elucidate the principles of family systems theory and systemic interviewing, which form the basis of genogram work. Once these principles have been explained, the authors go on to present the important clinical applications of genograms in both family therapy and family medicine. These applications include the effective assessment of patients’ risk for emotional problems such as anxiety or depression; structural patterns among families such as divorce and remarriage; relationship patterns such as enmeshment, conflicts, and cut-offs; recent and chronic life stressors such as pregnancy, acute illness, poverty, and racism; and family life cycle transitions and developmental crises, among other uses. By providing a fascinating view into the richness of family dynamics, McGoldrick and her coauthors provide an invaluable guide to clinicians for accurately charting a family’s structure, making it easier to scan for potential problems and take proactive steps to utilize resources when necessary. 32-page color insert

Provided lots of info!!! This was a great book. Really wanted to buy it.Good GoodSo excited to use this! This book is so cool! It has genograms of famous people as visual examples!

Algorithms to Live By Free Pdf

ISBN: 1250118360
Title: Algorithms to Live By Pdf The Computer Science of Human Decisions
Author: Brian Christian
Published Date: 2017-04-04
Page: 368

“A remarkable book... A solid, research-based book that’s applicable to real life. The algorithms the authors discuss are, in fact, more applicable to real-life problems than I’d have ever predicted.... It’s well worth the time to find a copy of Algorithms to Live By and dig deeper.”―Forbes“By the end of the book, I was convinced. Not because I endorse the idea of living like some hyper-rational Vulcan, but because computing algorithms could be a surprisingly useful way to embrace the messy compromises of real, non-Vulcan life.”―The Guardian (UK)“I absolutely reveled in this book... It's the perfect antidote to the argument you often hear from young math students: ‘What's the point? I'll never use this in real life!’... The whole business, whether it's the relative simplicity of the 37% rule or the mind-twisting possibilities of game theory, is both potentially practical and highly enjoyable as presented here. Recommended.”―Popular Science (UK)“An entertaining, intelligently presented book... Craftily programmed to build from one good idea to the next... The value of being aware of algorithmic thinking―of the thornier details of ‘human algorithm design,’ as Christian and Griffiths put it―is not just better problem solving, but also greater insight into the human mind. And who doesn’t want to know how we tick?”―Kirkus Reviews“Compelling and entertaining, Algorithms to Live By is packed with practical advice about how to use time, space, and effort more efficiently. And it’s a fascinating exploration of the workings of computer science and the human mind. Whether you want to optimize your to-do list, organize your closet, or understand human memory, this is a great read.”―Charles Duhigg, author of The Power of Habit“In this remarkably lucid, fascinating, and compulsively readable book, Christian and Griffiths show how much we can learn from computers. We’ve all heard about the power of algorithms―but Algorithms to Live Byactually explains, brilliantly, how they work, and how we can take advantage of them to make better decisions in our own lives.”―Alison Gopnik, coauthor of The Scientist in the Crib“I’ve been waiting for a book to come along that merges computational models with human psychology―and Christian and Griffiths have succeeded beyond all expectations. This is a wonderful book, written so that anyone can understand the computer science that runs our world―and more importantly, what it means to our lives.”―David Eagleman, author of Incognito: The Secret Lives of the BrainBrian Christian is the author of The Most Human Human, a Wall Street Journal bestseller, New York Times editors’ choice, and a New Yorker favorite book of the year. His writing has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic, Wired, The Wall Street Journal, The Guardian, and The Paris Review, as well as in scientific journals such as Cognitive Science, and has been translated into eleven languages. He lives in San Francisco.Tom Griffiths is a professor of psychology and cognitive science at UC Berkeley, where he directs the Computational Cognitive Science Lab. He has published more than 150 scientific papers on topics ranging from cognitive psychology to cultural evolution, and has received awards from the National Science Foundation, the Sloan Foundation, the American Psychological Association, and the Psychonomic Society, among others. He lives in Berkeley.

What should we do, or leave undone, in a day or a lifetime? How much messiness should we accept? What balance of the new and familiar is the most fulfilling? These may seem like uniquely human quandaries, but they are not. Computers, like us, confront limited space and time, so computer scientists have been grappling with similar problems for decades. And the solutions they’ve found have much to teach us.

In a dazzlingly interdisciplinary work, Brian Christian and Tom Griffiths show how algorithms developed for computers also untangle very human questions. They explain how to have better hunches and when to leave things to chance, how to deal with overwhelming choices and how best to connect with others. From finding a spouse to finding a parking spot, from organizing one’s inbox to peering into the future, Algorithms to Live By transforms the wisdom of computer science into strategies for human living.

Life changing This book is a very good introduction to several mathematical concepts that many people have heard of, but don't know much about. Brian Christian also does something very clever: he makes these concepts eminently relatable. It may sound like hyperbole, but the chapters on optimal stopping and explore/exploit changed my life. I save a lot more time not trying to figure out which parking spot to choose or where to eat.The most impactful concepts are clustered in the front of the book, which is again optimal for those readers with short attention spans. The stuff later in the book is also very enlightening, just not as universally applicable as optimal stopping or explore/exploit.This is not a book designed for people with an advanced understanding of math or computer science. It's designed as a gateway to bring in people like me who are interested in these fields, but are perhaps a little intimidated.Read it now, people.
