Love the updates to this powerful book!Should be required reading The work of Dr. Tatum should be required reading for every teacher and student alike. There is no excuse for ignorance of racial identity development when such an amazing resource is available.Classic updated for our modern times The book has been thoroughly updated with references to new research and current events woven into it. It includes chapters on Black racial identity development in childhood, adolescence, and adulthood, which I have found extremely insightful and practical. Dr. Tatum brings in examples from raising her own sons and tidbits of the conversations she had with them, modeling parent-child interactions around race for parents who may be faced with similar problems. Another part that I found very useful is the discussion of Affirmative Action and some arguments against it that are frequently brought up. That section helped me articulate my own position better and be more prepared for times when such conversations arise spontaneously with students or colleagues. Overall, this is a classic and a highly recommended read for anyone interested in issues of social justice, equal opportunity, democracy, and the psychological underpinnings of prejudice.

Continued Excellence from Burke I have been a Robicheaux fan since I discovered him in my teen years and I wait with anticipation for each new novel about him to appear. Burke’s storytelling skills never disappoint and NEW IBERIA BLUES is no exception. Besides being an excellent writer, Burke’s wisdom about history, human nature, and life in general are profound, as well as his ability to paint beautiful prosaic pictures of New Orleans and the Deep South state of Louisiana where most of the stories unfold. The violence and evil he writes about are softened by the personal philosophy that runs through every tale and efforts to make sense of the world we live in without sacrificing the excitement and anticipation that keeps me reading to the last page. His insight into Robicheaux’s struggle with alcoholism and his own humanity are astounding and his skill at putting human flaws and strengths into words unsurpassed. He is a man who definitely grasps the human condition, both good and bad, and who is able to describe it with clarity and sensitivity. Burke is, indeed, a master at his trade, Robicheaux a character who seems to be a modern Everyman, and I do not relish the wait for the next installment!Not his best but a really good read. I had a hard time putting this book down. James Lee Burke, in my opinion, one of the greatest American authors and certainly the finest wordsmith. There was a lot to keep track of in this book, it helped that I have read all of his previous works.Talent always rates an extra star James Lee Burke has a lyrical way of telling us what makes people do what people do. His turn of phrase and musings are smart and eloquent as they come.However, New Iberia Blues as a story only gets 3 stars from me. I found it so full of beautiful soliliquies that the actual storyline suffered. It became disjointed, motionless and boring. It's more of a short story peppered with insights. The story itself made ramshackle sense, and I forced myself to finish it because it was a pricey digital purchase. The flow of communication between characters was oftentimes painful. There was no fluidity. I felt that while Parker, Crais, Coben, and Slaughter can say a lot with terse lines from their players, I was invariably left in the dark as to the reason for some of the verbal interplay. Or what the correct inference was supposed to be. JLB has a way with insightful paragraphs, but not so much for dialogue with rapport.

Beautiful despite its flaws Robin Hobb’s Assassin’s Quest marks the end of what has become one of my favorite fantasy trilogies.The story picks up where the second book, Royal Assassin, left off. The king is dead, slain by treachery. Fitz is thought to be dead too, and he’s broken again, this time in mind as much as body. (Hobb is rather fond of battering her protagonist.) After a long convalescence, Fitz sets out to avenge the king and find his true heir.But the pacing remains slow, with a clear goal and some of the strongest fantasy elements (dragons and prophecies) only coming in now, in the third book. And the ending is less climactic than I expected: the final confrontations with the marauding Red Ship raiders and the king’s killer are both resolved in a few pages. Most of the story—more than usual—is about the journey to the solution rather than its application. There’s no glory for Fitz either. He’s not actually much of an assassin, but he still prefers working in the shadows, acting as an unrecognized catalyst. I also could have done with one fewer instance of Fitz being captured by and then escaping from his enemies.Worse, the balance between showing versus telling occasionally feels off. Hobb is brilliant at demonstrating how Fitz experiences the Wit (telepathy with animals) and the Skill (telepathy with humans). But each chapter begins with a note written after the fact by Fitz, mini-information dumps that either expand on a key mechanic or summarize events happening elsewhere at the time of the narrative. Often this works as an efficient way to convey necessary-but-tedious details. But occasionally the format feels repetitive and forced, as if Hobb wrote one of these mini-essays simply because she’d locked herself into doing so. And in the least-satisfying instances, some of the series’ great mysteries are resolved in this brisk manner.So why do I like the books so much? Because, despite everything I mentioned above, the story sings for me. The writing is beautiful, and Fitz and his wolf Nighteyes headline a cast of memorable characters. Thank goodness Hobb wrote other novels in this world. I’ll be back to read them, flaws and all.Not all it's cracked up to be! I started this trilogy because of all the great reviews. I finished this trilogy because once started, I wanted to know how it ended. Such a disappointment. Hobb repeated the historical information over and over and over and over....... until I gave up and began to skip sections that were repetitious. The main character Fitz was basically a screw-up, and did not improve with age, it was like he had "Loser" stamped on his forehead. I mean really, 3 books later and he still can't get anything right?! The most interesting characters in the book were the wolf and the "Fool". There are hours and hours and hours of conflict, but the resolution to the whole mess is summed up in about 1/2 hour, and Fitz doesn't even play a part in the resolution once it starts. This could have been a fantastic saga, but it wasn't.As rich, deep, and engaging as the prior novels, but with more things happening, and faster This continues the story of Fitz, Nighteyes, and the Fool during the reign of Regal. New characters and old cross paths with Fitz to tip the fate of the world. Has Verity survived, and will the Six Duchies follow a constructive path toward the future or a darker path, with or without help from Elderlings? Will Fitz grow up, master parts of himself and his magic, and overcome at least some of his old and recent traumas? Or will he continue in his closed in, stubborn, and at times impulsive ways, sacrificing his own and his wolf’s needs for loyalty to older men and to the Six Duchies? And where are the frigging dragons? As usual, the characterization is superb for a fantasy novel, and both Fitz and Nighteyes change in believable, touching, and at times amusing ways. The wolf often steals the show. After a somewhat tedious and slow beginning that caputes narratively the feeling of repetitiveness, stuckness, and timelessness of severe trauma, the plot pucks up. Much more hapens in this book than in its prequels, and the true power and complexity of the Skill and the Wit finally become revealed gradually to Fitz and to the reader. As in the previous books, there are occasional questionable decisions by some characters, that a discerning reader can tell the author made happen not because they make psychological or practical sense, but because they push forward the plot; these glitches in Hobb’s writing are generally easy to forgive in light of the novel’s overall strengths.

I love this book. Though I could stop there and say nothing, I really want to try and persuade you of its value as I believe it will have a tremendous impact on your thinking – it sure did have an impact on mine.

I found it interesting, first of all, that Gary Smalley wrote about how he encouraged Steven Scott (the author) to read through Proverbs one chapter per day and doubling up on short months so he would read through it 12 times per year. I’ve been doing this for about 9-10 months and it has really had an impact on me. There are so many great insights in the Proverbs. However, I discovered many new ways of thinking about the Proverbs as I read through this book (one night – that’s all it took; however, I plan to read it again while taking notes now).

The concept that Proverbs itself teaches us (Proverbs 2:4) to contemplate the Proverbs more deeply to find the greater treasure was a complete oversight on my part. After seeing this, from Steven Scott’s book, I realized that I had been doing the right thing by reading the Proverbs over-and-over again; however, I also gained the insight that I needed to meditate upon the individual Proverbs more closely as well.

A favorite verse of mine, for years, has been Proverbs 22:29, "Seest thou a man diligent in his business? he shall stand before kings; he shall not stand before mean (common) men." Diligence, to me, has always meant to work effectively (efficiently doing the right things) and this was confirmed by this book. In addition, new insights were discovered like the four steps taught by Solomon for achieving diligence in your life. They are:

1) Wake Up to Reality
2) Define Your Visions
3) Effectively Partner
4) Pursue Wisdom; Build Your Life upon It

This is just a drop in the bucket of what the book has to offer. I hope this review helps you make your decision.

This is one of the best books ever. What better person to take life lessons from than the wisest man who ever lived. Scott boils down the teachings of Solomon into everyday language and gives examples of how they apply to daily life.

Although, drawn from the Biblical book of Proverbs it is not a preachy book. Truth is truth, no matter what the source, and you can benefit from this book wheather you are "religious" or not.

Much of it may seem like common sense as you read, but how common is "common sense" and how diligently do we use it even when we know it? Steven Scott’s book is full of pearls of wisdom from King Solomon, the richest man who ever lived.

The author had lived a life of failure up to the point that he was challenged to read one chapter of Proverbs (one of Solomon’s books of wisdom) daily. This plan allowed him to read through the entire book monthly (some months he had to read two chapters a day as Proverbs has 31 chapters). He read through the entire book numerous times and has had great results.

What Scott experienced was life changing. He transformed from a failure to a super successful person financially and otherwise. During his journey in learning from Solomon’s wisdom, Scott categorized the Proverbs into 46 categories. He has included 15 of those in this book.

This is a terrific book that certainly has the potential to be life altering for those wise enough to apply its precepts. Highly recommended.

Operations Management made easy with this book. The book is bulky and so was the course load but learned a lot and the book was awesome. There is a lot of calculations involved and the book actually shows how to do them using Linear Programming, Excel and what not. The chapters were well laid out and they kept building on previous chapters so the flow was pretty good. I had a really lazy professor who went to skip a chapter but I stuck with the book and life was a lot easier. The end of chapter solutions are somewhat tricky but if you pay attention, they shouldn’t be big deal. The best part of the book is resale price. I bought this book, used it for a whole semester and then traded it in at at least +10% on . So the book was literally free for me.

The book is very clearly organized, and isn’t bad to read at all. It clearly outlines important pieces of information as well so you never really have to go digging for the facts or concepts that you will actually need.
