Title: After the Eclipse Pdf
“Stunning . . . A graceful and powerful memorial.”—Entertainment Weekly
“Raw and perfect.”—Laura Miller, Slate
When Sarah Perry was twelve, she saw a partial eclipse; she took it as a good omen for her and her mother, Crystal. But that moment of darkness foreshadowed a much larger one: two days later, Crystal was murdered in their home in rural Maine.
It took twelve years to find the killer. In that time, Sarah rebuilt her life amid abandonment, police interrogations, and the exacting toll of trauma. She dreamed of a trial, but when the day came, it brought no closure. It was not her mother’s death she wanted to understand, but her life. She began her own investigation, one that drew her back to Maine, deep into the darkness of a small American town. A memoir of “unerring power and hard-won wisdom” and a “tender elegy”* for a mother lost, with After the Eclipse “Perry succeeds in restoring her mother’s humanity and her own” (New York Times Book Review).

This book is about continued love and sacrifice between a mother and daughter This book is about continued love and sacrifice between a mother and daughter, and keeping Crystal's memory alive beyond the horrors of her death. It also recognizes the extensive impact that violence against women has on entire families and communities - and above all, how humans (in this case, Sarah) have incredible capacity for strength, resiliency, and healing- even in the absence of closure. As a prior elementary school classmate of Sarah's, this book helped me to process many of the lingering questions that I had about her mother's death, and to gain further insight into what happened to Sarah in the years following (as I don't recall her classmates getting much info on where she went after she left our school). As with others from Bridgton at the time, I will never forget the moment when I learned about Crystal's murder, having an overwhelming concern for Sarah and the long road ahead for justice. We needed this book as much as I imagine Sarah needed to write it.Don't be put off by the dark subject matter. This book is full of hope. Don't be put off by the dark subject matter. Perry has taken a story that would have been an unmitigated tragedy in other hands and infused it with warmth, light, and humanity. I'm surprised others have said it's a hard read because page after page I couldn't believe how full of hope this book was. It’s a story about the challenges and hard-won victories of the working poor, about the decisions strong women make under the most unsympathetic circumstances, and the way family ties break down and rebuild in the aftermath of a tragedy.Perry is both clear-eyed but compassionate toward the people in her book, including the men who passed in and out of her and her mother’s life even as she critiques the way misogyny contributes to violence against women. I’m stunned at how an author who has lived through such darkness has managed to write with such generosity toward so many. I'm stunned at how simultaneously authentic and gentle she is with her readers.Like Perry, I grew up poor, in rural Maine. It’s a place I worked hard to escape. And yet this book filled me with aching homesickness for both the people and landscape of my childhood. I couldn't put it down.Read this exceptional book. It’s timely. It’s wonderful.Tragically beautiful This is the most tragic beautifully written true crime story I have ever read. It has touched me so strongly I think about the author and her struggles days after finishing. The authors descriptions of Maine are right on target (tree branches cracking with ice). Memories return as I grew up in a Maine small town. Shortly before I moved from the state a women I knew was murdered in a room over a bar then deposited in the Kennebec river. Just as Sarah Perry writes about her mother being judged and criticized for her behavior so was the woman I knew. Appalling that some will judge a human life worthless..
